Local Talent: Doug Hall - Glossy FX

We have some very talented photographers in Newcastle and I had the pleasure yesterday of learning more about Doug Hall who is a man passionate about catching the essential element of a moment.

Doug works with clients to elicit and capture exactly what they’re looking for from the photographic session that will be meaningful for them and express their unique qualities.

Interestingly, Doug Hall is all about his work being an expression of his own desire to create magic and his decision to follow that passion informs all the decisions that he makes in his business. He works hard to make it easy for clients to have their moments exquisitely rendered forever and insists on the highest production values in printing and processing.

An example of special work that Doug does is a case where he took some beautiful candid shots of a young woman, as well as an unusual and lovely black and white classic art-style portrait. What a great gift for a teenage daughter to keep for life.

What I love about Doug’s business model is that he is generous in his approach and makes that simple by charging for his time shooting and making negatives available for clients. This makes it easy to budget and spend our photography dollars in the most practical way – getting great professional products and wonderful affordable prints for family.

Whether it is for family portraits, or business, Doug can capture a moment and bring it to life in a way that you can share with others.

You should call and speak with Doug if you know someone thinking about getting a lovely portrait of themselves, or for a child who might be having a birthday soon, or updating your professional portrait.

And for business owners, ask about the business profile movies that can be created for your business.

Why Coaching Is Great For Business

Many family businesses run into the issue of complexity getting in the way of doing what the owner likes to do. Often started as a technical ability the owner has, the business grows up around that skill, and suddenly the owner is not using their technical skills, but now running a business, which many have never trained to do.

Instead of doing the work they love, owners can be burdened with adminitration tasks, employee management, purchasing and financial juggling. customer demands and on and on it goes.

This can be very stressful for the owner, and everyone associated with it. The owner is trying to manage, sometimes not very successfully, but rarely are they leading, which is really what the business needs.

By assessing the current situation with the owner it often becomes clear that there are parts of the business that are just left not well managed, simply because the owner may not have the skills to cover that area. There can be a lack of overall strategy and vision for the business, with the owner instead, 'putting out fires' all day long and just trying to keep up.

Where coaching helps the client and the business, is by creating a way for the owner to see his business from a new perspective and to get clarity and separate the day-to-day issues, from the structural issues, so that improvements and a more streamlined system can be adapted to suit. A system which takes all the best parts of what is happening in the business already, and sets a clear path to improving those 'no go' areas that the business needs to have addressed, but which have been just 'too hard' and put aside.

What we know is that people operate at peak efficiency when they are doing what they love. This is important for a business, so freeing the owner up to do what they love and having the employees more productive, better organized and clear on their responsibilities, with the resources they need to accomplish their tasks, makes for less stress all around, happier customers, better financial outcomes and a business that is more valuable to sell.

Now that's a great example of why coaching is not just great for business... it is fantastic for business!

Succession Planning: Think Well Ahead

Are You Excited About Your Future?

What Happens To The Business After You Have Gone?

You will spend a great deal of your lifetime building
your business.

Come the time when you are ready to transfer
the business to a younger generation, how will
you plan for it? Have you done so already?
Discover some of the unique issues in planning
for and implementing the transfer of the family-owned
business. Business coaching can help to navigate some
of the delicate areas of your succession planning process.

Estate Planning And The Business Person

How long is it since you have clearly analyzed,
what you would like to happen to your personal
and business estate upon your death?

Have the following matters really been addressed?

For example:

What is the business really worth today?

What amount of debt is outstanding?

What is the net worth of your estate?

How would your spouse be provided for?

Would a family member take over the business?

Would this person have to buy out your share?
Or perhaps all shareholdings?

Are there any other family members you would
like to provide for?

Would you want to sell the business and would you want your estate to provide an equitable inheritance to each family member?

If not where would the cash come from?

What are the Capital Gains Tax consequences of your Will?

You can ensure that the right amount of cash
is available to carry out your wishes
through estate planning.

Key Difficulties

Lack of viability of the business

Lack of planning

Little desire on the owner's part to transfer the firm.

Reluctance of offspring to join the firm

Heirs or beneficiaries...how to tell?

But wait a minute... We've talked about what happens if you die. What happens if you don't? What do you want to happen with the business into the future? You plan to stay working until you drop, or do you have other things you want to do with your life in the years to come. Do you want the business to continue when you retire? Who will run it then? Will you sell it or pass it on to your children? Do they even want it? How will you get paid for it?

Business succession planning should be an ongoing process, not an event. It is planning to be in charge of the future you want for your business, and for yourself.

Picture the future you want... see it - feel what it's going to be like - and then you can build toward making it the reality.

The Secret Asset In Any Business

Business owners often work hard and try to think of everything in their business. Yet this element which can eventually become the biggest asset in the business... is overlooked completely.

What is it? It's your client or customer base.

Corporations are getting amazingly good at collating information on customers now using bar codes on coupons and the like. Some might consider this "too much" information. For the small business owner though, while this level of data collection is less available, there is a lot more information available - and known to merchants - than ever get collected, stored and analyzed.

This information, on both a Prospect database, as well as a Customer Database that is set up for marketing purposes (and no, your customer list for invoicing won't do!), can be the key to retaining business, gaining new customers and growing referrals from customers and your networking partners. In fact, your networking partners can have their own database! This attention to detail can form part of what makes your business stand out as different.
This is crucial to take in hand and get right, since it will have a direct effect on the profit potential of the business and the price the business may sell for at some time in the future. It will also have a big impact on making the next buyer WANT to buy the business.

And don't forget, there is nothing more stress-relieving than happy long term customers, buying more and bringing their friends with them!

What can you do to get started?

Here are four things to get you started.

Create a system to capture information you have on prospects.
Improve your data collection process for customers.
Implement a customer 'touch' program.
Start!

Have more ideas? Let's see them!

PS Yes, love to work with clients on issues like these!- Lindy

Local Business And Social Media

Social media and marketing using social media are the hot topics right now.
For business the potential to get into social media as a way to promote more sales and spread the word about what they do, has never been greater.

In the December Nielson survey, it was revealed that 9 Million Australians are not regularly engaging in social media with Australians leading the world in time spent online.

This video from Small Business News has some interesting insights into what small business is thinking about social media, in the US. Australian business is perhaps somewhere behind in thinking about social media, but many of the insights will be a fit for our Australian local business market.

Businesses Adopting Social Media At A Greater Rate

And here's an intro to social media slideshow I created for a recent business presentation.

Getting onto online networking is something I'm all for... and yet to do so without a strategy is asking for a poor result. Like anything you do in business (or life for that matter!), it's going to have a better chance of creating a good result, if it is done with some purpose in mind, and with mind to all the areas you need to cover off on, to ensure that your plan is carried out in such a way as to get you a good result.

You know that when something becomes a news item, there is often a stampede by people with no clue and much hide, who will take it as an opportunity to fleece the unsuspecting. Social media is no different. And it's no different from what you know already about life in general. There are no free lunches, there are no quick ways to make money by doing nothing. If you want to make use of social media to promote your business, it will cost you money, it will cost you (or someone you pay) time, and it will mean reviewing your business overall to get the right fit and to ensure that you are delivering on your promises.

In fact that's a good reason to investigate social media now. It may be part of the way to replace money you're spending on strategies that have no capacity to work.

Start to research the topic online. Look for help from people who are in that market and will be able to give you the right information, in the right context, and who have an online reputation to protect.

Have you thought about social media for your business?
