Networking. Who Loves Ya, Baby?
Driving to an appointment the other day I pondered - not for the first time - the huge number of business hours each week, each month, each year, going into what is called networking and wondering "Why isn't this working?"
And it dawned on me the similarity between these networking sessions and what happens behind closed doors with what we sometimes call lovemaking.
Here's the shocker.
Lots of people are clueless in bed too.
When it comes to networking, we can be like the erstwhile lover, screaming in silence "no - not that... do this..." but yet never say a word out loud to the one we are with... while the partner fumbles around, achieving little, save for creating frustration, irritation and perhaps regret.
Just like in sex, we can expect people to know what we want most, what we need for it to work out well and an interest in the interaction culminating in satisfaction for both parties.
People are terrible mindreaders.
Or like just a casual hook-up with someone whose name you'll never even remember or maybe cross the street to avoid if you see them later.
Networking, if it is to be successful needs both to be concerned about the outcomes for the other.
Not standing aloof waiting to be serviced.
Are you a considerate networker?
Successful networking should be about building relationship and sharing a mutual interest in getting good results for each other and those they refer for assistance.
Time to end the Wham-bam casual bumping into strangers.
What's your best strategy to encourage mutual gratification in networking?
Come on now. Networking. It's Business Time.

Networking Imposters
Okay it seems like time to raise an issue that's been on the periphery forever but never seems to be brought into clear focus or get a mention. Networking is about more than just following people, or getting on their mailing list or showing up as a connection.
Networking - For What Purpose?
There is really only one reason that people network. To enhance their business opportunities. Yet the reality is that a lot of what passes for networking is about swapping cards and telling people about what we do. Often... and I might say most often... to people who are not there to advance your opportunities, only their own.
You see the problem.
Without a willingness to be of value to others, we are pretending to be networking. If we are not genuinely interested and willing to find some way to add value to those with whom we are networking, then we are really impersonating networkers and that leads us to being little more than networking imposters.
Imagine a network or an event for networkers... where 90% of the people have no plan or strategy for helping other members present.
What would you call that? I call it a waste of time. And it is happening at network after network, at event after event.
Lots of glad-handling. Lots of talking big. Precious little actual energy going into taking some proactive steps to advance the relationship in a practical way.
I don't know the reason for this lack of action but I have a hunch that for many, the reason is that there is no clear strategy for people to take to do something useful to advance their networking relationships.
Even in highly structured networking groups, where we are called to remember to "give first" this can often play out as "You give first" and that's really not the intention.
There are some myths that get trotted out too, from time to time.
A favourite Grand Myth, is that of "The Big Opportunity"
People love to tell you about their wonderful plans and how you can be involved, and you can be part of it too... Just spend your time getting involved in helping them to bring their grand plan to life and you'll be there in the thick of it when it comes to fruition.
Guess what?
No you won't.
And the chances are neither will they.
There will probably be nothing come of this and in the meantime you'll have wasted untold hours putting effort in to someone else's dream for nothing.
If what you do is valuable, then it is worth getting paid for. Something.
There is no business that you need to support above your own business.
That's the first rule to set for yourself.
Business Or Charity?
If they have nothing to pay you, in money or in kind that is valuable to you, then consider this a donation to charity.
It will be your donation to charity, and if you think this worthy to donate to, then go ahead, but don't for a moment confuse it with business.
Or expect a return on your investment.
And of course, this applies to you too. Don't expect people to work for you on a promise. Be better than that. If your business or your idea needs help to get going, pay the money. That's just a cost of doing business.
Of course I would... BUT
Perhaps the greatest networking myth of all is this one.
"I have to get to know you before I can refer business to you."
While that is true to a point, we don't want to refer people to known crooks, it is also a great excuse to do nothing.
How do you really get to know how good someone is?
You do some business with them or introduce them to someone who might be a good connection for them or might need their services.
Until you do that, it doesn't matter what you know about them, you won't know how they handle that situation, till you give them one to handle.
Until you do that, nothing happens.
When you collaborate effectively and with full intention, and actions to match and when you all do that... nothing can stop you.
What strategy will you use?

Notworking! (TM pending)

Business networking has taken off in recent years. More people are finding their way online and in search of new ways to find people to help build their personal network, and of course the possibility - the hope - that new business will result from this magical and ever-growing network they are developing. From the first tiny seed, they envision a massive tree of branches, carrying bounteous fruit in the form of New Business.
As owner of several networks, moderator of several more, and member of more still, I am exposed to a lot of networks, networking people, and ideas on what constitutes "good networking online" and am happy in most cases to proceed as something of an 'open networker'. Up to a point. I'm happy to connect with new people I don't know yet, and willing to be open to develop a relationship with them if that opportunity arises over time into the future.
This open-ness of course ceases when someone displays evidence of being a pest.
So here's the deal. Want to network? Sure. Great. Join me on Facebook. Invite me to your network on Linkedin. Follow me on Twitter and enjoy access to a little bit of me and my thoughts, and if the occasion arises, a bit of help along the way. A headsup here, an idea there, a laugh or thought or other shared moment, as we learn about each other and navigate the path from respected stranger to welcome friend.
Want to progress that relationship? Move it along a bit faster? Notice if I do something that you find is useful and give me feedback. Send me a private message to say hello. Ask me a question. Send me a funny line or a clever quote. Think of something interesting that I will be entertained by, and I'll love it. I'll respond when I can and if we get on really well I might even let welcome you in to my closer circle of contacts. That's reasonable conduct is it not?
The kind of way that a relationship of any kind may develop.
Know me.
Like me.
Trust me.
This seems incredibly straightforward to me.
Instead I see increasingly, examples of a quite different approach.
It is more like:
You don't know me.
You impose on my better nature with:
A deluge of self-absorbed propaganda, sales letters and invitations to lame networks on topics that have no interest and which you've lazily clicked on "invite all" with the complete disrespect to your full list of contacts, that you've shown me.
A self-serving (and entirely misguided) virtual graffiti explosion on my network page in the delusion (supposedly) that it is going to reap you some reward. Or worse - you bombard my whole network membership with the same.
You continue to imagine in your delusion, that this is endearing to me.
One For The Record
Whatever it is that you think you are doing when you do this to me or any other of your network connections, it is not networking. It is simple bad manners.
It is not marketing.
It is not selling.
It is not building relationships.
It is not engendering trust.
Whatever it is... Stop it.
